South Mountain Freeway effort- New vote needs 700 signatures

Backers of a new plan to move the South Mountain freeway extension out of Ahwatukee Foothills and onto Gila River Reservation land have about three weeks to collect 700 signatures for their cause. Councilman Sal DiCiccio said the effort is most likely the last viable attempt to save South Mountain and the homes and church along Pecos Road. "If this doesn't work, nothing else will work," DiCiccio said The proposed route, developed by Gila River Indian Community landowners and private land developer Pangea Development, is different than the one tribal members voted down last month. Under the plan, the 202 extension would be built primarily on privately owned land south of the proposed Pecos Road alignment in the Foothills.
