$57M orthopedic hospital planned for site near Sky Harbor

United Surgical Partners International Inc. is beginning construction this week on $57 million orthopedic specialty hospital that will employ 140 people when it opens in January 2011. The 71,000-square-foot surgical hospital will be a joint venture between 37 orthopedic specialists, San Francisco-based Catholic Healthcare West and Dallas-based United Surgical Partners International Inc. The physicians will be the majority owners, with the two hospital systems each owning an equal share of the new facility near Loop 202 and 40th Street, said Josh Miller, director of development for United Surgical. He said that site, near Sky Harbor International Airport, is central to the doctors who are partners in the new facility. CHW and United Surgical have worked together on joint ventures for more than a decade in the Valley, managing five outpatient surgical facilities in the Valley and others in Las Vegas and California, he said. Expected to treat more than 4,000 patients each year, the Southwest Orthopedic and Spine Hospital will include 44 in-patient private rooms and eight operating rooms, as well as an intensive care unit. Its proximity to the airport will allow the hospital to serve patients from throughout Arizona, California and Nevada.
