Phoenix 9th in natural population growth

There were 59,738 births in the Phoenix metro area between July 1, 2010, and July 1, 2011, and there were 26,891 deaths, which puts the city's natural population growth at 90 people per day, according to an On Numbers analysis of new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. Phoenix ranked 9th out of 366 U.S. metro areas in natural population growth. Migration is the other component of population growth, which was not included in this particular data but will be released Thursday by On Numbers. On Tuesday, the Phoenix Business Journal shared the metro area’s overall population gain (which includes both natural and migration growth). The New York City metro area, which sprawls across parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, registered a natural increase of 112,336 people between July 2010 and July 2011, or a pace of 308 people a day, the highest in the nation. All but 33 metros registered more births than deaths during the time period. The biggest exception was Pittsburgh, which had a surplus of 3,260 deaths.
