Section of I-10 south of Phoenix area set to be widened
Relief is in sight for drivers who often find themselves caught in traffic bottlenecks on Interstate 10 between Casa Grande and Picacho Peak.
The State Transportation Board this week approved a $31 million contract with Fisher Sand & Gravel Co. to add a lane in each direction along that 10-mile stretch of interstate. Construction will span from Milepost 199 near Casa Grande to Milepost 210, about five miles west of Picacho Peak.
Fisher is expected to start on this project later this summer and plans to finish it in a year and a half. It is funded by federal stimulus dollars.
Arizona Department of Transportation spokeswoman Laura Douglas said drivers can expect at least two lanes of traffic in each direction will remain open for most of the work.
But "there may be occasions during construction in which traffic may be reduced to one lane" in both directions, she said. "This would occur primarily during the overnight hours."
ADOT gradually has widened I-10 along the 116-mile route between Phoenix and Tucson.
