Mesa mayor reveals possible locations for Cubs training site
Sites at Riverview Park and its golf course, downtown and northeast Mesa are emerging as the most likely homes for a new Chicago Cubs spring-training complex as the city attempts to finalize a plan to sell to voters by late September.
Mesa Mayor Scott Smith confirmed the three front-running locations and said momentum appears to be building for Riverview and downtown Mesa.
"These are the three areas the Cubs have shown the most interest in and are looking to vet," Smith said.
The team apparently rejected the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport area.
City officials face a relatively short deadline. Their plan would go on the November ballot. Early balloting would start in late September or early October.
