Surprise lays out villages of the future

On Tuesday, Surprise Planning and Zoning commissioners will vote on the design of the first village, called Village 1, Surprise's downtown and one of its more densely developed districts. City planners have drafted a 20-year vision for Surprise with nine villages that stretch from Buckeye to Yavapai County and accommodate a half-million people. Their broad-based document is the 2030 General Plan, which should go before voters within two years. Until then, residents are being asked to help design their villages. If development again reaches the pace of the previous decade, city leaders want to be prepared.
