Five Mistakes Home Builders Make
It’s common knowledge that home builders haven’t made money in recent years-and they’re trying desperately to change that. Thousands of staffers laid off. Floorplans made smaller. Coffee gone from the break room. Well, trade-pub Builder says builders are still leaving money on the table, or committing “the operational equivalent of throwing a pile of cash into a dumpster and setting it ablaze.”
The publication identified 50 ways that builders waste money (we’re sure there were more). Some of them are jargon-filled-”Ignore duct placement and sealing,” “Oversize your HVAC”-and not likely to spark a water-cooler discussion. Others seem to us like good common sense, if you’re trying to find buyers in this slow market. Here are five ways builders waste money or, as we see it, five mistakes builders make that turn off home buyers:
