Mekong developers hope to create new 'Chinatown' in Mesa

After setting high standards for aesthetics and variety, the developers of the Asian-themed Mekong Plaza want to lure investors to build similar projects in the area in the hope of transforming the Dobson Road and Main Street neighborhood into a new Chinatown for Mesa. Phil Ta and Peter Quach, the owners of the 2-year-old shopping and dining cultural mall, have spent nearly $2 million in the past six months to upgrade the food court on the north side of the mall and fill it with businesses. On Friday, the 100,000-square-foot mall will celebrate the opening of seven eateries, including an Asian and European bakery. Ta and Quach and two independent businesses are opening six fast casual Asian dining venues in the food court, which is providing more than 40 jobs, said Tina Martinez, the mall's property manager.
