Glendale sues feds over $500M casino

The city of Glendale is suing the Obama administration over a planned $500 million American Indian casino west of Phoenix. Glendale filed the federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Phoenix Tuesday seeking a reversal or injunction against a U.S. Department of Interior ruling the casino land could be counted as part of the Tohono O’odham tribes land holdings. The Interior Department also must approve a casino on the site, located at 91st and Northern avenues north of the University of Phoenix stadium. The Arizona tribe wants to build a casino and resort on the site, which it says sits on county land between Peoria and Glendale. A 1983 law allows the Tohono O’odham tribe to buy unincorporated land in the Phoenix area to replace historically lost lands. Glendale argues some of the land on the casino parcel is land it actually annexed in 2001. Glendale also doesn’t like the casino being located across from Kellis High School and near residential neighborhoods.
