Coolidge looks to annex Mesa-owned land
More than 6 square miles of Mesa's Pinal County land would become part of Coolidge under a proposed annexation.
The proposal is no big surprise to Mesa, said Natalie Lewis, an assistant to the city manager who has been involved in the discussions.
"At some point we knew that we were going to be annexed in Pinal County, and our focus right now is about maximizing the value of our land," she said.
She said Mesa and Coolidge are working on a pre-annexation agreement and that the cities have a good working relationship.
The terms of that agreement, she said, could make Mesa's land more attractive to buyers than if it remained in unincorporated Pinal County.
Mesa's Pinal County parcels have become a key component of the city's effort to build a new spring-training facility for the Chicago Cubs.
