44th-Camelback debate reignites
The contentious struggle over redevelopment of the northwest corner of 44th Street and Camelback Road has reemerged after two years in a dormant mode. Though the new proposal for office buildings calls for far less density and more simplicity than the mixed-use development submitted in 2007, some neighbors are still unhappy with the plan.
The Phoenix Planning Commission will consider the issue Wednesday night at its regular meeting.
At issue is whether the commission should approve a request to modify stipulations submitted by the landowner, Dallas Police and Fire Pension Fund. Those stipulations govern primarily the maximum height and setbacks on the 17.4-acre property. The stipulations do not require zoning changes, but they do require approvals from the Camelback East Village Planning Committee, a Phoenix planning department hearing officer, the planning commission and city council.
The Camelback East Village Planning Committee approved the modified stipulations in September in a 12-9 split decision.
