Arizona cotton growers seeing strong yields
Arizona cotton growers have just finished their harvests and now are getting their land ready for planting again next spring.
The Grand Canyon state is an ideal place for cotton to grow, as it thrives in a long period of sunny, warm weather and at least 160 frost-free days.
But nighttime lows in the 90s at the end of the summer cost Scottsdale resident Adam Hatley some of his crop.
"We originally thought the crop looked like a good yield," he said. "But the crop needed to have cooler nights to recover from the heat during the day. It ended up being very average, at best."
Hatley, 46, leases and farms 3,800 acres near Thomas Road and 92nd Street from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Of that, 2,300 acres go toward the production of upland cotton, the most widely planted cotton in the U.S.
