China firm coming to Valley?

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon said he is working with a Chinese company that is considering the Phoenix area for a project that could bring as many as 10,000 jobs. He said he couldn't disclose the name of the company or its industry because of a confidentiality agreement and for competitive reasons. Such a project would be about the size of Honeywell International Inc. or Intel Corp. operations, which bothhave about 10,000 employees in the Phoenix area. Gordon went to Washington, D.C, last week and met with Chinese business officials, and he also attended a state dinner for Chinese President Hu Jintao. He said the Chinese are very interested in creating jobs in the United States. "I am excited about some of the contacts I made there," he said. Although Arizona has received a lot of attention over its new immigration law, deficit and other issues, Gordon said, "Fortunately, a lot of the political issues in this state are not affecting the way China is looking at investing." Another Phoenix official alluded to the possible project while speaking at a World Trade Forum on Wednesday at the Snell & Wilmer law offices in downtown Phoenix.
