Phoenix infill housing project expected to receive council's approval

Final approval is expected Wednesday for one of the last infill projects in northeast Phoenix. Little opposition is expected when Michael Lieb takes his project at Tatum Boulevard and Greenway Road before the Phoenix City Council. Lieb, who picked up the 17-acre parcel at a foreclosure sale, plans 167 detached single-family residences on the site, which was vacant until last year. The development will feature clusters of two-story homes wrapping around a small commercial development at the corner. Lieb's attorney, Michael Curley, said he and Lieb met with neighbors numerous times to work out the project. Some neighbors remain concerned about density and the type of development, but they did not testify before the Phoenix Planning Commission, which heard the case in mid-January. Curley anticipates construction to begin soon, although the economy has put numerous other projects on hold. He said four or five homebuilders have shown "strong interest" in building on the parcel. He attributed the reasons to location, the fact the parcel is infill and the pent-up demand for new homes.
