Meritage Homes, one of the largest home builders in the United States, is expanding into the Raleigh-Durham market of North Carolina. The Phoenix-based company has purchased 46 one-acre home sites at the Inwood Forest community in south Raleigh. Meritage (NYSE: MTH) plans to sell Inwood Forest homes at prices ranging from the high $200,000s to the mid-$300,000s, says company spokesman Brent Anderson. Meritage, which operates in a dozen metropolitan areas from coast to coast, has promoted Clint Szubinski from the company’s Florida division to serves as president of the Raleigh operation, which will open in the next month or so with a handful of employees. Meritage specializes in building energy-efficient homes. The company is aiming to hold a grand opening – with model homes – for Inwood Forest in September, Anderson said. Under that time frame, the first homes would be completed in early 2012, Anderson says. As of Dec. 31, 2010, the company had 151 actively selling communities in 12 metropolitan areas, including Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Phoenix/Scottsdale, Tucson, Las Vegas, Denver, Orlando and the East Bay/Central Valley and Southern California.
