Pinal County No. 2 for growth in past decade
The core counties of America’s metropolitan areas grew 10.3 percent during the past decade, and Pinal County was No. 2 for growth.
The 10.3 percent growth rate easily outpaced the growth rate for the rest of the nation, the 672 counties in the metro-central classification contained 236.8 million residents as of April 2010, accounting for more than three-quarters of America’s total population of 308.7 million. The nation’s metro-central counties grew with impressive speed between 2000 and 2010, adding more than 22 million people, according to an analysis of new U.S. Census Bureau data. They easily surpassed the growth rate for the rest of the nation, which was 7.7 percent.
Pinal County, which is southeast of the Phoenix area, was the second-fastest-growing metro-central county. Its population grew by 109 percent from 179,469 in 2000 to 375,770 in 2010.
The fastest-growing metro-central county is Kendall County, Ill., located west of Chicago. Its population grew by 110 percent from 54,539 in 2000 to 114,736 in 2010.
