Texas firm wants to renovate closed Scottsdale movie theater
A small Texas theater chain is turning into a screen saver with its plan to renovate a theater at the Sonora Village shopping center, which has been closed for more than a year.
Movie Grill Concepts X LLC hopes to revive the theater by adding more comfortable seats with tables and armrests that will accommodate food and liquor service in the auditoriums. It also will feature digital projection for all nine screens, said attorney Clare Abel, representing the theater company.
That will allow live concert feeds and other digital entertainment, she said.
Luxury theaters with lounge-type seating, food and beverage service and reserved seating are a growing trend in the movie business. Two other chains - UltraStar Cinemas and iPic Theaters - opened with similar concepts last fall in Scottsdale.
Fall opening planned
The Studio Movie Grill near Hayden Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard plans to open in October, company spokeswoman Lynne McQuaker said.
The Dallas-based company, with four theaters in Dallas, two in Houston and one in Atlanta, will start renovation once it secures a liquor permit and gets approval from Scottsdale's Development Review Board, Abel said.
The Scottsdale City Council recommended approval of Studio Movie Grill's liquor license in early April.
