Gilbert planners OK permit for SanTan Village Apartments

The Gilbert Planning Commission on Wednesday approved a conditional-use permit for a SanTan Village Apartments, paving the way for a 382-unit complex proposed near SanTan Village mall. Once built, the apartment complex will rank as Gilbert's fourth largest and could bring 1,000 new residents to the area. "This is a huge catalyst for the north end of the growth corridor," Gilbert planner Amy Temes told the commission. "It will bring a large number of people to this end. It will be a real boon for that area of the mall to have more shops, more commercial services to come in to help support the residents of this area." The Planning Commission's unanimous decision is final unless appealed to the Town Council. SanTan Village Apartments will be built near the southwestern corner of Ray Road and SanTan Village Parkway, adjacent to the Legado Hotel and SanTan Elegante conference center. The site is on the north side of the mall, which is still dominated by farm fields and vacant land. The addition of a large apartment complex could spark construction in the area, including shops and restaurants, Temes said.
