Apartments planned on Fiddlesticks site

A 384-unit luxury apartment complex is slated for the former Fiddlesticks Family Fun Park in Tempe. Scottsdale-based Mark-Taylor Residential plans to develop a sprawling complex on the 19.5-acre site. The Tempe City Council approved the project in October, but the land sale was not complete until mid-December. The development company, which has built luxury apartments across the Valley including five in Tempe, purchased the land for about $6 million. The new Tempe apartments will be two- and three-story buildings totaling 507,000 square feet, according to a Tempe staff report. The site was zoned for commercial use, but the council approved an amendment to the General Plan Projected Land Use Map to make way for the residential development. According to the staff report, a neighborhood meeting was not required for the project because there is no residential development within 300 feet of the property. No public input was offered prior to council approval. Since opening in 1992 near Elliot Road and Interstate 10, Fiddlesticks became a popular entertainment venue for Valley families, schools, churches and community groups. The park included a driving range, video-game room, miniature golf, bumper boats, go-karts and kiddie rides.
