Town limits enlarging once again
After a calendar year with no annexations, the Town Council began the new year with a public hearing on a new measure to continue the town’s northwestern push.
The proposed “Barclay Annexation” is a 160-acre square approximately eight miles from downtown. It includes land owned by Fry’s supermarkets, a shopping center developer and a mini-storage developer, town Community Development Director Mark Eckhoff told the council at its Jan. 3 regular meeting.
The land is directly east of the Gila River Indian Community and west of Walker Granite Road. Hunt Highway runs across the property’s northeast corner.
This annexation would bring the town’s total area to 62 square miles. It would also put the town in range of another state land annexation, bringing the northwestern town limits up to Arizona Farms Road.
Eckhoff was the only one to speak at last week’s public hearing. The town may now seek signatures from property owners.
Eckhoff said the town hasn’t completed an annexation since Dobson Farms in 2010, which included the property that eventually became the state’s largest solar energy field off Bella Vista Road.
