Outlet mall welcomed as a draw for Glendale Westgate

Merchants and shoppers this week welcomed the news that an outlet mall will open this fall within walking distance of Westgate City Center. Tanger Outlet Center Westgate will be built near Loop 101 and Glendale Avenue. "I think it's phenomenal," said Dennis Glathar, manager of Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant. "It'll be more of a draw to the Westgate area." Glathar said it was exciting to see investment come to the area where no new construction has occurred for more than four years. He anticipated more foot traffic at the restaurant from shoppers going to the 328,000-square-foot mall. It's hit-and-miss now at the restaurant, with some days filled with patrons if there's an event taking place nearby, and other days empty, he said. "It's good for us," he said. "With 85 stores it will be a huge magnet for people during Christmas-time shopping." The new retail outlet is a shot in the arm for businesses in and around Westgate, which saw most of its property fall back into the hands of lenders last year. My Big Fat Greek Restaurant on 95th Avenue is one of two eateries still open for business adjacent to the open-air mall's site. The other two businesses, Jepe Gelato and Camarones Mexican Grill, both closed their doors.
